One month later, two young girls in Michigan died after a generator ran in their attached garage — the fumes drifted into the house before anyone knew what was happening.
Every one of these deaths is a tragedy. But with proper use and precautions, CO poisoning from portable generators can be prevented. If you are considering using a portable generator during a power outage, follow the guidance below to substantially reduce the risk of CO poisoning:
- Always operate generators outdoors, at least 20 feet away from any home. Always. Generators are often used after inclement weather, and therefore it can be tempting to bring them under cover. However, there is no safe operation of a portable generator indoors, even for a very short period, even in an open garage. CO can waft in through doors, windows, or roof ventilation, so it’s important to keep portable generators at a safe distance from homes.
- Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Detection is prevention. A working CO alarm on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas, is one of the most reliable ways to catch dangerous buildup of CO before it’s too late. - Look for generators certified to our standard, UL 2201. In order to be certified to UL 2201, a portable generator must produce a reduced CO emission rate and be equipped with a sensor that automatically shuts the generator off if dangerous levels of CO are detected. In 2022, the CPSC conducted testing, based on roughly 140,000 simulations of real fatal incidents, that concluded, “generators compliant with the UL 2201 standard would avert nearly 100% of the deaths that occurred with the current, non-compliant generators.”
