Lithium-Ion Battery Incidents in Aviation: 2025 Data Review

Among the common types of devices carried on board by passengers, some are more significant potential contributors to thermal runaway incidents than others. Portable chargers were responsible for the most incidents in 2025, with 30% of reported incidents attributed to these devices on passenger flights.

KEY Themes

Global awareness of lithium-ion battery hazards remains dangerously low, with at least a quarter of travelers worldwide incorrectly packing portable chargers in checked bags.

Additionally, round two-thirds (65%) of travelers across the board recall lithium-ion safety announcements, but there is a disconnect between when travelers notice these announcements, and when they would prefer to receive them. Typically, these messages are seen or noticed when passengers are moving through security checkpoints. However, most travelers would prefer to receive lithium-ion battery safety information during booking, including 34% of North Americans, 27% of Europeans, 25% of Latin Americans, and 19% of Asia-Pacific travelers.

  1. Éducation des passagers: Most passengers do not know about best practices for packing and handling lithium-ion battery powered devices. Education can make a difference, even if the message is simply to keep rechargeable devices within arm’s reach.
  1. Formation du personnel de cabine: All cabin crew are trained to respond to thermal runaway incidents on board an airplane. However, cabin crew self-identified gaps in their understanding of thermal runaway events and the appropriate order of operations when addressing these fires. The recommendations that emerged include the following: Training design and procedures should be closely linked to available safety equipment, should be evaluated and revised based on emerging risks, and should replicate common, real-world scenarios. Additionally, planes should be equipped with the appropriate safety equipment in the correct locations.
  1. Le service Normes et engagement d'UL dirige le Programme d'incidents de fugue thermique (TRIP), un système de notification volontaire conçu pour permettre à l'industrie aéronautique de mieux comprendre l'ampleur du problème et de se préparer à de futurs incidents - ou, idéalement, de les prévenir.   

Les participants de 37 compagnies aériennes de transport de passagers et de fret fournissent des informations détaillées sur les incidents survenus dans le cadre de leurs activités. Les informations sont rendues anonymes et partagées avec l'industrie aéronautique et les organismes de sécurité, ce qui permet d'améliorer la sécurité du transport et de l'utilisation des produits alimentés par des batteries au lithium-ion. La base de données TRIP fonctionne comme un outil de surveillance, conçu pour recueillir des données sur la fréquence, les caractéristiques et les conséquences des incidents liés à l'emballement thermique des batteries au lithium-ion dans les opérations de transport de passagers et de fret. 

L'administration fédérale de l'aviation recueille également des données sur les incidents liés à l'emballement thermique. Les données de la FAA proviennent des rapports fédéraux obligatoires, tandis que TRIP inclut des rapports supplémentaires à chaque étape du processus de voyage en tenant compte des incidents survenus dans le terminal, lors de l'enregistrement des bagages, aux points de contrôle de sécurité et à la sortie de la salle de réclamation des bagages.
