It’s that time of year again — time to wear cozy sweaters, sip on spiced lattes, and travel to spend time with loved ones, often with gifts in tow. As you narrow down your holiday shopping list, you may be considering rechargeable, battery-powered gadgets from smartphones and laptops to e-bikes, power tools, and children’s toys. But before you click “Add to Cart,” or pack for holiday travel, make sure you know how to choose, handle, store, and recycle these devices safely this season.
What is the Risk?
of Americans admit to knowing nothing about lithium-ion batteries
Almost all rechargeable devices today are powered by lithium-ion batteries, yet in a recent study, UL Standards & Engagement found that 50% of Americans remain unaware of how prevalent these batteries are and the risk they present of fire from thermal runaway if improperly handled, stored, or charged. With travelers carrying up to four rechargeable devices on each flight, and even more expected during the holiday season, the need for awareness is higher than ever.
At UL Research Institutes, through our Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety campaign, we aim to educate people about the safety risks and proper use of lithium-ion battery powered devices — to help prevent and mitigate thermal runaway incidents. When properly handled, these devices are safe to use and can be the perfect gift to purchase and pack in your carry-on luggage this holiday season.
How to Stay Safe
Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety by following these tips:
- Choose Certified Products: Select devices certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory to ensure they meet important safety requirements.
- Handle with Care: Always follow manufacturer guidelines and use the charger provided. Charge devices in safe environments away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and flammable materials — never under a pillow, blanket, or in a bag. Unplug devices when finished charging.
- Always Stay Alert for Warning Signs: Regularly inspect devices for damage such as swelling or punctures, unusual sounds like hissing or popping, or excessive heat, strange odors, or smoke. If you notice any of these signs, immediately unplug and stop using the device. Keep devices visible when traveling and charging — never put devices or rechargeable gifts in checked bags.
- Recycle Devices and Batteries Properly: Never toss batteries in public trash bins or leave them behind when traveling. Check size limitations before your flight to make sure you can bring them. Never modify batteries or chargers.
- Get Out Quickly if There’s a Fire: Create a home escape plan and practice it with your family. Evacuate immediately in the event of fire, closing doors behind you as you exit, and call 9-1-1. In public spaces like transit hubs, locate exits and escape routes.
- Educate Others on Safe Practices: If gifting battery-powered devices, inform recipients of how they can Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety using safe travel and charging practices.
It is crucial to see these guidelines not as individual tips, but interconnected steps — each measure supports and reinforces the others in helping reduce risk and create a safer environment at home, at work, or on-the-go.
