Innovation has long followed a familiar path. New technologies emerged, markets developed, and standards followed.
That model no longer fits the world we’re living in. It’s easy — even cliché — to say innovation has never moved faster. The more important truth is that innovation has never had the conditions to move this fast. Advances in AI, computing, connectivity, and data are reinforcing one another. Innovation isn’t simply accelerating, it’s compounding, compressing decades of progress in a matter of years.
Innovation is moving at exceptional speed. Public trust, however, is not. The gap between the pace of innovation and the pace of public trust may be the defining challenge of this era.
Too often, innovation is framed as a choice between speed and safety. It’s a false choice. It is not enough for a technology to be first. It must be trusted enough to be adopted. Safety standards have always been one of the most powerful mechanisms for building that trust.
They reduce uncertainty. They establish common expectations. They allow innovators, investors, regulators, manufacturers, and consumers to move forward with greater confidence. They create the conditions that allow innovation to scale.
Recent research reinforces what many of us in the standards community have long believed: technologies supported by strong standards are more likely to become the foundation for future innovation. Standards are infrastructure. And infrastructure enables change.
But infrastructure must be built for the world it serves. The principles behind standards — consensus, rigor, independence — are timeless. The processes that bring them to life cannot afford to be static.
Historically, standards have been in response to innovation. Today, if standards are to remain a foundation for progress, we have a responsibility to anticipate innovation, identifying emerging risks, convening expertise earlier, and helping build trust before uncertainty slows adoption.
The question is no longer, “How quickly can we develop a standard?” It is, “How quickly can we identify emerging technologies, understand their risks and opportunities, convene the right expertise, and build confidence before uncertainty becomes a barrier?”
That requires new ways of working.
It means investing in earlier sensing and identifying risks before they become headlines. It means bringing together industry, policymakers, researchers, first responders, consumer advocates, and others long before technologies become ubiquitous. And it means recognizing that today’s challenges are interconnected and require a shared responsibility. AI intersects with cybersecurity. Batteries intersect with transportation, buildings, and energy. Connected infrastructure intersects with nearly everything.
The standards ecosystem must seek to understand where technology is going, not to expedite a necessarily deliberate process, but to be prepared to move on standards more quickly because the risks are anticipated and the environment is understood.
The goal is not to move as fast as possible; it is to move as quickly as evidence allows. Updates to safety standards will not and should not evolve at the pace of software releases. Consensus takes time because earning trust takes time. Losing it, however, can happen in an instant.
Promising technology rarely stalls because it lacks potential. It stalls because society loses trust in how it will be used. The technologies vary but the lesson is the same: innovation moves fastest when people trust it.
The standards organizations that will shape the future won’t simply be those that react the fastest. They will be those that anticipate the smartest, bringing diverse voices together early, identifying where trust gaps are emerging, and building the frameworks that allow innovation to flourish safely.
Innovation can happen overnight. Trust cannot. Our responsibility is to ensure that trust keeps pace with technological progress so innovation can reach its full potential.
