UL Standards & Engagement will be at the NCOAA Carbon Monoxide Safety Summit to lead two expert sessions on carbon monoxide risk and prevention. We’ll share findings from our U.S. State CO Risk Assessment Report, highlighting which states face the greatest risk and why, and explore data-driven strategies to improve CO safety through standards, codes, and public policy.

What is the CO Safety Summit?
The CO Safety Summit is a national gathering dedicated to advancing carbon monoxide (CO) safety through collaboration, innovation, and action. Hosted by the National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Association (NCOAA), the summit brings together experts, advocates, and frontline leaders for three days of learning, networking, and problem-solving.
The summit focuses on key themes like a decade of progress in CO safety, the power of cross-sector partnerships, and strategies for long-term prevention through research, policy, and public outreach. It runs in conjunction with NASFM’s Fire Prevention & Safety Symposium, emphasizing the critical link between CO safety and fire prevention.
Our Perspective
Standards play a critical role in promoting carbon monoxide safety by ensuring that products and systems are designed to meet rigorous safety requirements. UL Standards & Engagement maintains a catalog of more than 75 standards that address CO risks across residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
To build on this foundation, our U.S. State CO Risk Assessment Report provides a data-driven analysis of carbon monoxide risk across the country, highlighting disparities in health outcomes, code adoption, and public awareness. The findings underscore a persistent and dangerous misconception: that CO poisoning is unlikely to occur. With our research and efforts to raise awareness, we aim to support states in addressing carbon monoxide risks and improving safety outcomes.

about this session
Which U.S. states face the greatest risk from carbon monoxide and why?
In this data-rich session, UL Standards & Engagement will present findings from our groundbreaking U.S. State CO Risk Assessment Report, which explores state‑by‑state carbon monoxide risks. Sayon Deb and Anna Schnerre will unveil a four‑tier framework—built on health outcomes, code requirements, and public awareness—highlight key detection and policy gaps and offer recommendations on how to mitigate carbon monoxide exposure risk at the state-level.
Following the presentation, Sayon Deb will be joined by New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean Toomey and Carma Hanson of Safe Kids Grand Forks for a fireside chat. Together, they’ll discuss how to turn data into action—highlighting simple, proven steps state can take to improve health outcomes related to CO poisoning and how individuals and organizations can get involved.

about this session
Improving health outcomes related to carbon monoxide poisoning requires more than awareness—it requires action. In this roundtable session, experts will explore practical, high-impact steps that states can take to reduce CO-related injuries and deaths. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, the discussion will highlight effective strategies grounded in data, equity, and real-world implementation—ranging from updating building codes and improving alarm enforcement to investing in surveillance systems and targeted public education.
Participants will gain insight into the policy levers available at the state level, examples of successful models, and how to support efforts that balance public health, feasibility, and long-term impact.
