Phil Piqueira Appointed Immediate Past Chair for ANSI Board of Directors; Sonya Bird Appointed Director-at-Large
On January 1, 2024, new members and officers began their term of service on the Board of Directors of the American National Standards Institute. Among these are Phil Piqueira, vice president of global standards at UL Standards & Engagement, serving as Immediate Past Chair, and Sonya Bird, ULSE vice president of international standards, serving as a Director-at-Large.
Piqueira’s new role follows more than a decade of service as an ANSI Board member and three years in the role of Chair of the ANSI Board, which began on January 1, 2021. During his time as Board Chair, he oversaw governance of ANSI properties and affairs, as well as issues such as emerging technologies including artificial intelligence and nanotechnology. Piqueira also oversaw efforts to strengthen public-private partnership, increase consumer engagement, and expand education and training opportunities in standardization.
"Thank you to everyone at ANSI for their outstanding work and dedicated support throughout my time as Board Chair,” Piqueira said. “It's been an honor to contribute to the strategic vision needed to navigate change and strengthen our standardization system for tomorrow."
As a Director-at-Large, Bird will support the Board of Directors in its responsibilities of approving ANSI's strategic priorities and annual budget, and any changes to membership fee structure or appointments to board committees. Bird will also assist in electing board officers and deciding issues and approving policies that would significantly change or affect the strategic direction of ANSI or the voluntary standards federation.
“I'm so honored to be a new Director-at-Large for ANSI Board of Directors,” Bird said. “ANSI is such an important organization in driving and promoting voluntary consensus standards in the US, and in making sure U.S. interests are considered in the international standards landscape. I look forward to working with others committed to improving life through voluntary consensus standards.”
UL Standards & Engagement applauds Piqueira and Bird for their service on the ANSI Board of Directors. ANSI’s commitment to enhancing the global competitiveness of U.S. business and quality of life through standards directly aligns with the UL mission of working for a safer world, and ULSE is proud to have members of our leadership team representing our organization on the ANSI Board of Directors.
