The following is an excerpt from the New York Daily News op-ed “How to fight lithium-ion battery e-bikes fires”  in which ULSE Executive Director, Dr. David Steel shares his views on how misconceptions are hurting public awareness of lithium-ion battery fires.

New York City’s law preventing the sale, lease, or rental of e-bikes that do not conform to safety standards has gone into effect. It’s an important step toward curbing the deadly lithium-ion battery fires that have plagued the city. It is not the only step that can or should be taken.

The City Council has been aggressive in its approach, particularly with battery storage and certification requirements and a battery trade-in program. But a holistic approach — that includes increasing awareness of the problem — must be part of the solution.
