The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS), the national standards body of The Philippines, recently announced the adoption of 16 UL standards as Philippine National Standards (PNS). UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) and DTI-BPS signed a collaboration agreement in 2020, which has led to the adoption of many UL electrical safety standards. The following list of adopted standards is the latest development in our partnership:

  • PNS UL 66:2023 – Fixture Wire (originally published by ULSE in 2018)
  • PNS UL 83A:2023 – Fluoropolymer Insulated Wire (originally published by ULSE in 2016)
  • PNS UL 83B:2023 – Switchboard and Switchgear - Wires and Cables (originally published by ULSE in 2020)
  • PNS UL 854:2023 – Service-Entrance Cables (originally published by ULSE in 2020)
  • PNS UL 1650:2023 – Portable Power Cable (originally published by ULSE in 2019)
  • PNS UL 1666:2023 – Test for Flame Propagation Height of Electrical and Optical- Fiber Cables Installed – Vertically in Shafts (originally published by ULSE in 2021)
  • PNS UL 1690:2023 – Data-Processing Cable (originally published by ULSE in 2015)
  • PNS UL 2250:2023 – Instrumentation Tray Cable (originally published by ULSE in 2021)
  • PNS UL 444:2023 – Communications Cables (originally published by ULSE in 2021)
  • PNS UL 1569:2023 – Metal-Clad Cables (originally published by ULSE in 2018)
  • PNS UL 1651:2023 – Optical Fiber Cable (originally published by ULSE in 2018)
  • PNS UL 1655:2023 – Community-Antenna Television Cables (originally published by ULSE in 2020)
  • PNS UL 13:2023 – Power-Limited Circuit Cables (originally published by ULSE in 2022)
  • PNS UL 44:2023 – Thermoset-Insulated Wires and Cables (originally published by ULSE in 2018)
  • PNS UL 1424:2023 – Cables for Power-Limited Fire-Alarm Circuits (originally published by ULSE in 2020)
  • PNS UL 1425:2023 – Cables for Non-Power-Limited Fire-Alarm Circuits (originally published by ULSE in 2022)

These standards provide general safety requirements related to the construction, performance, and markings of power cables, data-processing cables, instrumentation tray cables, metal-clad cables, and power-limited circuit cables. Further, they may serve as reference documents for suppliers, manufacturers, importers, testing laboratories, certification bodies, and market surveillance authorities and regulators.

In 2022, to help mitigate the risk of fire during the holiday season, DTI-BPS adopted UL 588, the Standard for Seasonal and Holiday Decorative Products as PNS UL 588, decorative lighting devices. The Standard provides specific requirements for temporary-use, factory-assembled lighting decorations, which could include parol lanterns - a traditional holiday decoration popular in Philippine culture.
