
George oversees the standards development team and drives the creation and continual maintenance of safety standards.
Dr. George A. Borlase is the senior vice president of standards development at UL Standards & Engagement. An experienced public safety leader, he leads the standards development team as the organization grows in both size and scope.
Borlase previously served as ULSE’s director of standards programs, helping to ensure that standards development activities actively included other stakeholders and leading the drive to initiate, develop, and publish new and updated safety standards. Before joining ULSE, he worked at the Science and Technology Policy Institute to support the White House on a wide array of initiatives. From 2011 to 2019, Borlase led multi-disciplinary technical teams at the Consumer Product Safety Commission. He has previously held positions at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, and served 10 years on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Borlase earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and has engineering degrees from the University of Michigan and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He is a registered professional engineer in Maryland.
