Data Science Team Shares Offerings in New White Paper

Data Science Applications in Safety Science is a newly published white paper presenting the data science techniques of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML). The document, authored by Dr. E. Andrew Kapp, research manager for UL Standards and Engagement, uses easy-to-understand language and provides examples of the application of these techniques to several projects undertaken by the Underwriters Laboratories Data Science team.

Summaries of the completed projects are provided, including: 

•    Safety Data Lake with Recommendation Engine
•    Safety Marks Detection Tool
•    Horizontal Requirements Analysis
•    Furniture Tip-Over Analysis 
•    ICS Code Classification 
•    Hazard Classification 

The goal of sharing these projects with stakeholders is to foster new opportunities to advance the work of UL Standards and Engagement and Underwriters Laboratories through the application of data science. 

Several of these projects are in production and testing phases, and will launch as externally available platforms in the near future.
