Cleaning products can be responsible for exposure to volatile chemicals, which can lead to respiratory irritation, headaches, nausea, dizziness and exacerbation of asthma. Long-term exposure may also contribute to cancer and other more serious health conditions. Because of the serious dangers cleaning product emissions can present to air quality in indoor environments such as schools, retail establishments, hotels and homes, UL Standards & Engagement has developed testing standards to help ensure these products are formulated safely and sustainably.

UL 2759, the Standard for Sustainability for Hard Surface Cleaners establishes human health and environmental criteria for products including bathroom cleaners, degreasers, dishwashing detergents, and glass cleaners. It prohibits the use of ingredients that have been classified as harmful or toxic for inhalation exposures, according to Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations (CCCR) SOR/2001-269. The Standard also prohibits cleaners from being formulated with carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins or endocrine disruptors.
